Introduction
How many pressure transmitters should be installed on an industrial reactor?
There is no universal answer. The required number depends on the reactor structure, control strategy, and monitoring requirements.
Three areas are commonly considered: the reactor gas space, the jacket, and the mechanical seal system.
1. Reactor Gas Space Pressure
The gas space above the liquid is usually the primary location for monitoring reactor pressure.
A pressure transmitter installed at an appropriate process connection can provide pressure feedback for:
Process monitoring
Pressure control
High-pressure alarms
Interlock systems
For vacuum reactors, the instrument must also be suitable for the required vacuum measurement range.
2. Jacket Pressure Monitoring
A reactor jacket may use steam, hot water, thermal oil, or cooling water.
Its pressure is different from the pressure inside the reactor.
A separate pressure transmitter may be required when the jacket needs independent pressure monitoring, control, or alarm protection.
The transmitter must be selected according to the jacket medium, pressure, and temperature.
3. Mechanical Seal System Pressure
Some reactors use pressurized mechanical seal support systems.
Monitoring may be required for barrier fluid or buffer fluid pressure, depending on the seal arrangement and the manufacturer’s requirements.
This measurement is not the same as reactor internal pressure.
The correct instrument and measurement point should follow the mechanical seal system design.
How Many Transmitters Are Required?
A basic reactor may only require one pressure transmitter for internal pressure monitoring.
A more complex system may need separate instruments for:
Reactor internal pressure
Jacket pressure
Mechanical seal support pressure
These instruments serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Key Points Before Installation
Before deciding the quantity, confirm:
Which process variables must be monitored?
Which variables require automatic control?
Which alarm and interlock functions are required?
Are the measurement points independent?
Are redundant instruments required by the safety design?
Conclusion
The number of pressure transmitters on a reactor should be determined by its process and control requirements.
One transmitter may be sufficient for basic monitoring, while separate instruments may be necessary for the jacket and mechanical seal system.
